Line Poetry: Spey Casting mit der Einhandrute

Line Poetry: Spey Casting mit der Einhandrute is an artistically crafted textbook on fly casting. Through text, photography, and illustration, the water-contact-based casts are presented playfully and comprehensibly. Building on practical exercise tips for learning basic casting steps for a controlled and skilled execution of Roll Cast and Switch Cast, the book culminates in a detailed description of all essential Spey Casts.

What are Spey Casts?

Spey Casts are the "get-out-of-jail-free" casts in fly fishing. They leverage their advantages wherever an overhead cast cannot be executed due to obstacles. Their essence lies in the change of direction. This gives fly fishers the freedom to quickly change direction with a single continuous motion while casting. Due to the smooth movement, Spey Casts are particularly aesthetic and at the same time less tiring.

The technique was developed over one hundred and fifty years ago in Scotland on the River Spey for salmon fishing with the double-handed rod. Resourceful trout anglers discovered this technique for themselves a few years ago and adapted it for fly fishing with the single-handed rod. Thus, they master confined and obstacle-rich water spots where dense bank vegetation and towering banks, walls, and rocks restrict the casting of the fly line. Mastery of these casts enables catching fish in places that were previously deemed uncastable or unreachable.

This book is right for you if you answer yes to any of these questions:

  • Do you enjoy fly casting and learning additional casting techniques?
  • Have you realized that your repertoire of standard casts at your home waters is insufficient to place your fly promisingly in tricky spots?
  • Would you rather understand and internalize casting steps at your own pace instead of constantly pressing the rewind button of a video?
  • Do you delight in stunning photography of fly casting?
  • Do you want to own a stylishly designed fishing book that your family and friends will also flip through on the coffee table?
  • Or have you been impressed by the abilities of Christopher Rownes or Juergen Friesenhahn to clearly explain sequences of a fly cast during a casting course?
