Scientific Anglers Headway Single Hand/Switch Belly Shooting Head Float

With the modern Headway shooting heads, Scientific Anglers presents a new series of fantastic single-handed and switch shooting heads for salmonid fishing – whether it's salmon, sea trout, or steelhead. One thing all Headway shooting heads have in common: they combine a very balanced taper design with the best materials on the market for simply outstanding performance.

Brand new in the Headway series are the well-thought-out shooting heads for single-handed and switch rods, which promise enormous flexibility on the water with the respective interchangeable tips. The taper of the lines has been designed to allow overhead and single-handed spey casts to go equally smoothly.

Of course, it comes equipped with the unique AST Plus (Advanced Shooting Technology). This is based on an additive that is incorporated into the line and ensures a smooth surface even after long use. This is made possible by diffusion – meaning the said substance migrates from the interior of the coating to the outside, permanently conditioning the line surface. The result is a line that not only remains significantly smoother for longer but also causes noticeably less drag than comparable lines on the market.

But not only in terms of material does this compact shooting head have a lot to offer, because its harmonious design based on Scandinavian models gives it very appealing casting characteristics. First and foremost, it is remarkably easy to cast - both overhead and in the water. In addition, the relatively high weight distribution in the rear of the head makes it very easy to handle for controlled lifting and perfectly placed anchors. This lays the foundation for its assertive casting characteristics and tight loops. In this way, it effortlessly transports streamers and salmon flies of all kinds - from tiny summer flies to heavily weighted tubes for fishing in high water.

The Headway single-handed shooting heads are designed to work perfectly in combination with the sink tips from the Headway series. This makes the system extremely flexible - both in terms of fishing and casting. Because the casting characteristics can be adjusted according to the length and weight of the tip to meet specific requirements. But be careful: without a sink tip, the heads do not function properly. You can find the appropriate weights and combinations in the tables (product photos).

In short: The Headway Single Hand / Switch shooting heads from Scientific Anglers combine enormous versatility with very appealing casting characteristics. In combination with various sink tips, it enables successful fishing under a wide range of different conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for varied and energy-efficient fishing for your favorite salmonids.

The perfect combination for your rod:

Both the Headway shooting heads and the Headway tips are available in different lengths and resulting weights. This allows you to create a perfect line setup that meets your exact specifications. The total weight consisting of the shooting head and tip should roughly correspond to the ideal casting weight of your rod. This can usually be achieved through various combinations, giving you the choice of different overall lengths. For example, in the case of an 8/9 weight single-handed rod, you can choose between different combinations. If you prefer a slightly longer line, combining a 16 g head with a 15 ft tip is recommended. This setup has a weight of 25 g and a length of 9.5 m. To get a more compact setup, you can alternatively combine a 20 g head with a short 9 ft tip. This combination also has a weight of 25 g but only a length of 8.8 m. As always, the basic rule applies: a shorter line setup is usually easier to cast. In contrast, a longer combination allows for slightly longer casts and requires less stripping after each swing. The choice is yours!

Weight (without tip)Length
14 g (216 grain) 4.3 m
16 g (247 grain) 4.9 m
18 g (278 grain) 5.5 m
