Product information "Abel Reel & Spool Set SDF # 5/6 Classic Brown Trout Walnut Handle"
The Abel Reel & Spool Set SDF # 5/6 consists of an Abel SDF fly reel and a spare spool!
The Abel SDF # 5/6 Classic Brown Trout with Walnut Handle is the perfect addition to your fly rod for the stream, especially if you are a brown trout fanatic. This unique paint job on the fly reel makes your setup a real eye-catcher! With the class 5/6 you can equip your fly rod for everything from dry fishing to light streamer rods.
Each Abel® product in this highly limited edition is a unique design that is individually anodised by hand in the anodising workshop in Camarillo, California, using the company's proprietary artistic metallurgical process. The designs take between 2 and 14 hours for a single employee to complete. With this fly reel, you not only get one of the highest quality reels ever, but also a truly unique piece that is unrivalled.
The SDF (Sealed Drad Fresh) is largely based on the popular, award-winning and tried-and-tested saltwater flagship, the SDS. The design, high quality standards and drag system have been retained, but in a smaller, lighter and more refined version. The result: The best freshwater reel that Abel has ever made! But not only Abel itself swears by the quality of its new fly reel, independent judges are also 100% convinced, so that the SDF wins the "Best of Show" title at ICAST/IFTD 2017 and shortly afterwards "Best New Freshwater Reel" from Fly Fisherman Magazine.
The frame, spool, drag knob and reel foot are milled from cold-forged 6061-T651 aircraft aluminium. The cold forging process in combination with the hard anodising of the surface gives the reel an incredible robustness against all external influences such as impacts, sand, scratches, but also aggressive salt water. The airy, ventilated construction of the reel not only creates a modern, timeless and filigree look, it also combines a high degree of stability with a relatively low weight.
The label "Freshwater" is therefore somewhat misleading, as the reel also cuts an excellent figure in saltwater. Sea trout, sea bass or bonefish in the tropics - the SDF is absolutely saltwater-resistant and a reliable companion on the flats and coasts of the world, especially on lighter tackle.
This is not least due to the completely encapsulated multi-disc drag system, which has been slightly refined compared to its big brother, the SDS. It is based on the same alternating carbon and stainless steel discs, which distribute energy and power perfectly. However, the maximum braking force has been slightly reduced, as it was more important to achieve even finer adjustability of the braking resistance. At full power, braking forces of around 10 pounds are brought to bear, with the brake open, the resistance is barely noticeable, so you don't have to worry even with ultra-thin leaders. The low starting resistance in particular is essential. The braking power can be finely adjusted in no time at all using the smooth and easy-to-grip knob and always perfectly adapted to the respective situation, the target fish, your leader thickness, etc. One less thing to worry about when your dream fish is raging at the end of the line.
In short: The Abel SDF is modern, timeless, filigree and incredibly robust. The finely adjustable, encapsulated drag performs flawlessly in practice and is also ideal for fishing with the finest leaders thanks to its minimal starting resistance. But the SDF is also a great addition to your lighter saltwater rods, as it relies on the same design and the same durable components as its big brother.
