The High-Viz Rufa Ant is a versatile pattern for the entire season and is loved by fish. Formica rufa, also known as the red wood ant, southern wood ant, or horse ant, is widespread in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. It is one of the most common ant species in the world. The size of these insects ranges between 4–9 mm – this pattern is about 7 mm long and has proven to be an especially effective size.
The workers of this ant species climb in trees, gathering food and building materials for their nest, and are constantly exposed to the elements. They are easily blown onto the water – trout are very familiar with these insects and will regularly take them wherever they occur.
