ADH-Test: CND Nordic GTE Double-Handed Rods – Salmon Fishing on the Gaula
There are rods that become more enjoyable the more time you spend with them – and the CND Nordic GTE definitely belongs in that category. We tested the series extensively in Norway on the Gaula, and by the end of our week, we were impressed by how much power, precision, and feel this tool delivers.
Developed for demanding fishing in Europe, the Nordic GTE brings everything we expect from a modern two-handed rod – and even a bit more. In this video, we present the four-piece two-handed rods of the Nordic series in detail and take you along to the Gaula and the beats of the NFC (Norwegian Flyfishers Club).

Scandinavian DNA
The CND Nordic GTE was developed by NFisk in collaboration with CND specifically for the European market. The goal was to create a rod that combines the best qualities of classic CND rods with modern Scandinavian concepts. The result is a series of two-handed and switch rods that are extremely powerful on one hand, yet provide subtle feedback and feel at home with all casting styles.
The developers focused on a tip section that is stronger than those of many classic Scandi rods. At the same time, the action of the Nordic GTE reaches deep into the butt section – a typical CND feature that we’ve come to know and love from other rod series. This unique combination enables short, efficient casting strokes and precise stop points in touch-and-go casts. The speed that transfers into the line as a result is impressive – tight loops and high casting precision included.
And the best part: The Nordic GTE not only feels great to cast, but also gives you a secure feeling when fighting a fish. The deep flex in the lower blank provides tremendous power reserves when it really counts.

Design and Craftsmanship – Uncompromising Quality
Visually, the Nordic GTE immediately makes it clear that we’re dealing with a premium rod. The unsanded blank has a subtle, timeless graphite color that, thanks to its special finish, reveals a unique pearlescent surface. Beautiful and understated at the same time! The slim handle is made of top-quality cork and fits perfectly in the hand – whether you’re standing at the water for hours or casting heavy sink tips. We especially liked the finish on the upper part of the grip, where thumb and palm find a perfect fit thanks to an anatomical design. This ensures a relaxed grip and supports energy-saving casting for hours.
The high-quality black reel seat comes from Alps and is not only functionally excellent but also a visual highlight. The guides are robust, and the guide wrappings are additionally coated with Hitena epoxy – guaranteeing maximum durability even under the toughest conditions. Also well known from other CND series is the distinctive tip-top guide, which is of course included on the Nordic GTE and ensures minimal friction. Each rod is delivered in a Cordura tube – so it travels safely with you to the great salmon rivers of Europe.
Technologically, CND relies on a micro-pitch carbon structure that ensures tremendous recovery speed. More than 100 different carbon prepregs were tested until the perfect combination was found. The result is a rod that feels powerful and at the same time extremely smooth and harmonious.

Our Test on the Gaula
We fished the 13’ #8/9 and 14’ #9/10 models on the Gaula in Norway – classic salmon conditions with changing water levels. Both rods impressed us immensely, as they provide effortless, relaxed casting and are also capable of unleashing tremendous power with different casting styles.
The 13-foot version is a true all-rounder for situations where a 14-foot rod would be too much, but you still need casting power. It is extremely versatile and covers a wide range of typical scenarios. It particularly shined in smaller pools with tricky angles thanks to its more compact length.
The 14-foot version was our favorite for larger pools, long casts, and heavy sinking lines at the beginning of the week. Even with strong crosswinds and heavy sink tips, it cast smoothly and powerfully. The action is best described as deep-progressive – it loads noticeably down to the handle, yet remains fast enough to enable long casts with minimal effort.
What we especially liked: Despite its power, the Nordic GTE never feels sluggish or slow. On the contrary – the strong, fast tip creates a “smooth feeling” that becomes addictive.

Our Conclusion
The CND Nordic GTE is a rod for those who refuse to compromise. It combines power, precision, and elegance in a way that is rarely found. Whether you're casting classic Scandi shooting heads or handling heavy Skagit setups – this rod handles it all. And it's fun to use!
For us, the Nordic GTE is the perfect choice for ambitious two-handed anglers who have lost their hearts to salmon rivers – whether it’s the Gaula, Orkla, Lakselv, or Mörrum. And for those looking for a versatile rod in the lower line classes, the Nordic GTE Switch is a hot tip! It brings the same characteristics of classic two-handed rods to your local trout or sea trout river.
What we especially liked: Compared to many other modern rods from Scandinavia, the CND Nordic GTE offers a more powerful tip and deeper blank action, which releases an incredible amount of energy and means you need to use less effort when casting. You’ll really feel that after an intense week on the salmon river!
