Foam rubber is a versatile tying material and is always of interest when your dry fly should/must float particularly well. The thin foam is particularly popular for making the famous Chernobyl Ant, but also for various hopper patterns (grasshoppers) and is either cut into shape by hand or punched out using a template. However, the thin sheets are not only suitable for permanent swimmers, but also smaller patterns such as ants, beetles or Roman Moser's catchy balloon caddis cannot do without foam rubber. Sea trout anglers, on the other hand, swear by the highly buoyant synthetic material when tying surface streamers, such as the Gurgler.
