Tippet rings (also known as 'tippet rings') are the ideal connection between the leader/poly leader and the tippet.
The smooth rings are simply knotted to the end of a tapered leader or polyleader and then a piece of wear leader (tippet) is knotted on. This means that the tapered leader or polyleader retains its original length and does not become shorter after every fly change.
Another major advantage is the use of tippet rings if you want to connect a monofilament to a floucarbon. If you tie a monofilament directly to a fluocarbon, the load-bearing capacity in the knot is very low, as the fluocarbon has a sharper surface and shaves off the monofilament in the knot. The use of a tippet ring prevents this. The same applies when joining two lines with very different diameters.
Tip: Knot the tippet ring with the thicker line while it is still on the needle, this makes it easier to tighten the knot. Only then open the needle and remove the knotted tippet ring from the needle; this also has the advantage that you will not lose the tippet ring.
