Product information "Electric Cautery Tool with Battery"
This battery powered Cautery tool is actually a medical device that the fly fishing world has adapted for fly tying. Two batteries, which are located in the handle, heat the tip of the tool at the touch of a button.
One of the first and most popular users of the Cautery tool is the famous English fly tyer, Oliver Edwards. He uses the Cautery to shape the rubber legs of his nymph patterns, giving them a very realistic look.
The Cautery is held just below the rubber legs and the heat generated causes the rubber legs to soften and bend downwards with the help of gravity. This works even with the bigger legs of Honey-Shrimp patterns, eliminating the need to tie knots in the legs and giving your pattern an even more natural look. Another use of this tool is to clear materials from the hook’s eye. Every fly tyer knows this struggle: After the final knot, there are still a few strands of tying material hanging over the eye of the hook. Cutting them off accurately is often very difficult or even impossible, even with very fine and pointed scissors. With the wire tip of the Cauter tool, you simply touch the materials and they disintegrate away.
Once you have used this handy tool, you will never want to sit at your vice without one again.
Tip: If the Cautery is used with two fresh batteries, it may be too hot, after all, temperatures of more than 1000°C can be reached on the wire surface! Use half-full batteries instead. (However, this does not apply to the fixed tip model because it is a disposable device that can not control temperatures.) If the batteries are not strong enough, simply replace one battery and leave the other older battery - resulting in the perfect temperature for fly tying uses.
