Fly fishing for predatory fish is fully in trend! And the Thomas & Thomas Exocett is an all-rounder from the premium segment. A modern fly rod, which knows how to convince both in fresh- and saltwater and can be used without restriction for sea trout, pike, but also for exotic predatory fish. Lisa Jakubowski and Martin Riek have already had many successful raids with the Thomas & Thomas Exocett and present the powerful, handmade rods from the USA.
The Thomas&Thomas Excoett rods have now reached the top of our all time favorite and are our first choice when we head to the water for some streamer fishing. T&T rods have always been in the top league when it comes to performance and workmanship - but for some years the last bit was missing to fight their way to the top. There were two negative points for the rods manufactured in the USA: A large blank diameter and a rather high weight. All the more reason to be happy that the new Exocett rods are among the lightest saltwater rods on the market! Less material and a very thin blank diameter (which by the way cuts through the wind very well) contribute significantly to the weight reduction compared to the previous models. The rest is due to the components used and the perfect workmanship, thanks to which the rods can once again play right, right at the top. And have become our favorites.
Exocett rods are fast rods without being too stiff. The development of the new Strato-Therm resin technology on the nanoscale fills even tiny cavities in the graphite, resulting in improved strength and damping properties. Even the best resins in the graphite blanks are useless if no optimal curing of the materials is guaranteed. Here too, Thomas&Thomas already works with the best methods and takes the matter very seriously in order to bring out the optimal performance characteristics. The finished blank gets a so-called Low Friction Finish. This finish feels unique, almost like a ground blank and is also based on nanotechnology. It is a water-repellent smooth surface that does not exert any resistance to the fly line during the cast.
The ringing of the rods consists of Nickel RECoil rings and either a RECoil guide ring or titanium with ceramic inlay. A striking feature of the new T&T models is that the windings of the rings have been reduced to the bare minimum. The lacquer layer is applied by hand according to the motto "as little as possible, as much as necessary". The cork of the rods is, as with the other T&T models, by far the best that WE know. During the time we have been fly fishing we have never fished a cork that had fewer pores than the one from T&T. Even after many, many hard uses of the Exocett rods, not a small piece of cork broke from the handle. Even the individual discs (approx. 6mm) can only be recognized by the different grain and not by a gap.
A saltwater resistant aluminum reel seat which is double locked makes the high-end construction of the rod perfect. The only criticism is the size of the reel seat, we have seen bigger ones, which gives us more security, even if we have not lost a reel in the last two years or had to tighten the reel seat during the fishing day.
Classes 6 and 7 are fished by us with great pleasure on the coast for sea trout. The low weight and the precision on very long distances are the main advantages and make blind casting for a long time pleasant and easy.
Class 8 and 9 are our go-to rods when it comes to pike. We personally choose the line in the same class as the rod. The line may also be slightly overweight, as many modern lines are anyway. We also fished the Exocett models in Brazil for Peacockbass where we were allowed to test the butt section for the first time. Used correctly, this part of the rod has enormous reserves of power, which can be used to keep the fish away from dead wood, bank vegetation and other structures. Lisa has also fished class 8 for bonefish. It paid off that the thin rod loads the line super fast and brings the fly directly to the passing school. Even taking off large amounts of line for another try was no problem.
For us, T&T Exocett fly rods are first class saltwater rods with a flawless finish and convincing features. Granted: This rod series has a proud price.
