Tips & Tricks for Pike: Ready for the Flats!

Light Tackle - Brutal Takes. Pike fishing in shallow water with the fly is fun. And brings lots of action! In this video we show you lots of tips & tricks for success on the Pike flats.

Water as far as the eye can see! On large and open waters, it seems particularly difficult at first glance to identify potential Pike spots. Especially when the water is only knee- or waist-deep. However, even for these shallow water areas there are some clues that help us find the predatory fish. An important role is played, for example, by the wind direction, which not only influences the visibility of the water, but is also responsible for the movement of bait - which like to be guided by the current and gather in protective bays, for example. In the autumn months, those flats that have sharp drop-off edges are also particularly interesting. This is because when water temperatures drop, the pike can quickly leave the shallow areas and set up on the protective edges and in the deeper, warmer water.

In order to find flats with plenty of fish, however, you can't avoid 'going the distance' first. This means searching the area quickly and with many casts. As it is not uncommon to find many smaller and medium-sized Pike on the flats, which normally react particularly aggressively to our streamers, you can use this structured approach to decide after a very short time whether finer-meshed, more precise fishing is worthwhile - or whether it would not be better to head for the next shallow water area.

Once you've found a shallow water area with plenty of fish, it's usually one after the other. Because where there are two Pike, there are three. And where there are three, the fourth can't be far away. And with a bit of luck, there's a fat lady Pike lurking among many smaller males, pushing over our streamer with a big wave.

This exciting and action-packed fishery in knee- or waist-deep water is especially fun with the right tackle and the right combination of rod, line, leader and streamer. In our video we show you which tackle we particularly like to use for Pike fishing on the flats and answer the following important questions for you:

  1. Which tackle is suitable for Pike fishing in shallow water?
  2. Which Pike leader to use on floating lines?
  3. Which streamers are successful on the flats?
  4. How is the fly presented?
  5. How to strip the streamer?
  6. How to set the hook?
  7. How do you land a Pike by hand?
  8. How to release a Pike gently?

We wish you tight lines and a successful Pike season!
