Simple Flies - Under this motto we present you flies that are tied with few materials and in few steps. Because good flies don't necessarily have to be difficult - quite the opposite! These patterns can be tied quickly and easily. Patterns, that have proven themselves thousands of times in practice and with which you can quickly fill your fly box. We show you our interpretations and hope you have fun tying and fishing these Simple Flies. Let's go!
Zonkers are one of our absolute favourites and are our most successful streamer for big Trout! The Hot Spot Zonker is our variation of a classic zonker pattern to imitate a minnow. This streamer catches almost everywhere. Especially when the water level is high and when targeting big Brown Trout during season opening, we like to use it on a short sink tip.
You are free to choose a hook size between #1 and #8. Models such as the Ahrex TP605 (Trout Predator Streamer Light) or the Gamakatsu F314 are particularly suitable. We have chosen a #4 hook here - a universal size for chunky Brown Trout. Our Zonker is weighted with a tungsten bead (4.6 mm or 5.5 mm). The colour combination brown/grey/gold/orange imitates a minnow perfectly. However, all black also works very well and for light, clear water the colour white is a great option. Of course you can also tie this pattern on a shank with a free stinger hook.
Similar tying materials are used as for our Rusty Wooly Bugger. For the Hot Spot Zonker you need:
- Fly Scene Zonker Strips 5mm (Natural Chinchilla)
- Tinsel Blend Hair (deep gold)
- Tying Wire (gold or brown)
- Hedron Flashabou Dubbing (gold for the body)
- Hends Spectra Dubbing for the Hot Spot (orange)
And very important: brush the body vigorously after tying it! This is how the Hot Spot Zonker unfolds its full potential in the current.
